Definition of the Topic

The Binah Traditional Council of Chiefs of Ugep is the highest traditional decision-making body in the traditional system of government of Ugep Kingdom.

The Council is presided over by the Obol Lopon of Ugep, who is the Monarch of the Kingdom, together with the Okpebili of Ugep, who serves as the Prime Minister and Speaker of the Kingdom.

The Binah Traditional Council of Chiefs possesses the traditional authority to influence the legislative, administrative, and judicial affairs of the Kingdom. It is responsible for the formulation, interpretation, and implementation of traditional laws affecting the political, religious, security, social, and economic activities of Ugep Kingdom.

The Council is the custodian and protector of the customs, traditions, norms, and cultural values of Ugep, preserving the identity and heritage of the Kingdom for future generations.

Composition of the Binah Traditional Council of Chiefs

The Binah Traditional Council of Chiefs is composed of representatives from the 22 matriclans of Ugep, who also serve as the Chief Priests of the Ase fertility spirits of their respective matriclans.

The Council also includes non-matriclan Head Chiefs who occupy important traditional offices responsible for the administration of the Kingdom. Their responsibilities include policy formulation and implementation, traditional purification and cleansing rites, the observance of taboos, priesthood, adulthood initiation ceremonies, divination, the interpretation of hidden knowledge, defence and security, and the peaceful celebration of the Leboku International New Yam Festival.
