Definition of the Topic
The genealogy of the Obol Lopon Royal Stool Dynasty traces the lineage of the monarchs of Ugep Kingdom from 1746 to the present day (2026), covering a period of 280 years of the Obol Lopon Institution.
The right to occupy the Royal Stool of the Obol Lopon is the exclusive hereditary privilege of Leboljimor, the Royal Family (Royal Matriclan). This right is vested in the royal lineage and is exercised without interference from the non-royal matriclans of Ugep Kingdom.
It is important to note that Ugep Kingdom is made up of 22 matriclans, one of which is the Royal Matriclan (Leboljimor). The hereditary right of the Royal Family to produce the Obol Lopon is a traditional practice that is also found in many kingdoms within Nigeria and across the world.
Examples include the traditional monarchies of Benin Kingdom, Lagos, Ibadan, Abeokuta, Warri, Delta, and Calabar in Nigeria. Similar hereditary royal systems also exist in countries such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Morocco, Lesotho, Japan, Jordan, Thailand, Cambodia, and Saudi Arabia.
